AVENUES OF MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY

In Collaboration with Orthodontic Services

In working with an Orthodontist, he or she may tell you to seek out myofuncitonal therapy before they start your treatment. Certain habits of the cheek, tongue, and swallowing patterns, could work against the orthodontist and his treatment plan. This would prolong your treatment plan as well as his.  (Meaning lengthening the time you’re spending in braces.) In order to work in conjunction with your orthodontist, let’s work together changing habits that will then speed up your time in braces, as well as reduce your chance of relapse after you finish!

Our Services

Sleep Apnea Patients

Being an airway focused registered dental hygienist, Laura understands the importance of making sure we optimize your airway so you can breathe better and in turn sleep better!

Pre and Post Op Tongue Tie Releases

While planning your tongue -tie release visit, it is imperative you complete therapy before and after your release! Let’s work together to get you ready!

Patients with Facial Pain and Tension

Did you know your tongue can be compared to your abs or “core” of the body? If you have a weak core, the rest of your body compensates to do what it needs to do. Just like your abs, if your tongue is weak and untrained to be in the correct position, your neck, jaw, lips, etc. are all working together on your behalf to take care of what the tongue is failing to do!

Correction of Oral Habits

Myofunctional Therapy can aide in correcting problems such as tongue thrust, thumb sucking, lip sucking, and poor swallowing patterns.  Let’s get started with an evaluation to get you or your child out of a dysfunctional pattern.

WHAT TO EXPECT

SPECIALIZED OROFACIAL MYOFUNCTIONAL EVALUATIONS

At Functional Myo, we understand that a child’s facial growth, airway, sleep quality, feeding, and speech skills are all interconnected. We also understand the impact incorrect swallowing habits and tongue posture could effect adults sleeping patterns and or airway concerns (like sleep apnea).

Our specialized evaluation process allows us to look at all of these areas to determine the root causes of you, or your child’s symptoms. Each evaluation includes:

  • Detailed medical, developmental, and health history

  • Patient and/or parent interview

  • A review of current or previous therapy

  • Assessment of oral and facial muscles, including pictures, measurements, and videos

  • Feeding and swallowing assessment

  • Speech sound assessment

Evaluations are the starting point for successful therapy. Once we identify the underlying reasons for you, or your child’s challenges, we will discuss our findings, address your questions, and work together to create a tailored treatment plan. Referrals will be made as needed.
